Our brain, housing 87 billion nerve cells and ten times as many glial cells, relies on mitochondria, equipped with their own DNA, to keep the electric current flowing smoothly.


Picture your brain as a grand concert hall filled with 87 billion musicians (nerve cells) and ten times as many stagehands (glial cells). The nerve cells are the stars, but the glial cells work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring everything runs seamlessly. Mitochondria, with their unique DNA, play a vital role in keeping this orchestra energized, powering the electric currents that enable communication between nerve cells and support functions performed by glial cells.




2. The decline in mitochondrial function can vary among individuals and depends on factors like genetics, lifestyle, and environmental influences. In some cases, a reduction in mitochondrial function may occur without immediately leading to noticeable physical symptoms. However, when mitochondrial dysfunction reaches a critical point, it can contribute to the development of diseases or conditions.
